Which Is Better For Advertising, Social Media or Email Marketing?

In case you haven’t noticed lately, there’s a fierce debate going on among some “old school” marketers and the new breed of Social Media marketing entrepreneurs.

Here’s The Million Dollar Question…

“Which is more effective for advertising – the traditional email marketing approach or running campaigns on Social Media sites?”

There can be no question that with the explosion of Facebook and Twitter, Social Media is on the rise in a big way.

Businesses and individual entrepreneurs are taking notice, and taking sides.

It reminds me of the debates between Democrats and Republicans in American politics.

Often, in any organized society, people tend to label things in categories just like I mentioned above. You’re either a Republican or a Democrat. The Independent party does exist but tends to be small in proportion to the others. It’s just in our nature to be “black or white” on where we stand on any issue.

However, that middle ground “gray area” seems to the be the place where the best answers are found.

You see, when it comes to the debate of email versus Social Media, the most effective solution is… well, both!

A recent study conducted by Merkle “View from the Social Inbox” (2010) found that combining the two advertising sources works the best versus picking one or the other. The report also states that 42% of Social Media Users check personal email 4+ times per day, versus 27% of those not using Social Media.

So, in conclusion, some of the most active Social Media participants are also people who tend to utilize their emails more often than those that don’t.

So put away your debate hats and realize that the answer to this debate is like so many other things in life – it’s a “gray area” and the truth and/or best answer is somewhere in the middle.
